A Journey into My Danish Childhood Christmas

"Nu er det jul igen, og julen varer lige til påske" was the absolute favorite Christmas song of my Danish childhood. It marked the exciting end of the unbearable wait for Christmas Eve, on December 24th – and the joyful beginning of unwrapping the long-anticipated presents.

This particurly song was always the grand finale, sung after the 7-8 traditional Christmas carols, we sang while walking around the Christmas tree, hand in hand. Magical and unforgettable.

But “Nu er det jul igen” had its own twist: as soon as it started, we’d run through the house, often outside in socks – shoes are never worn indoors in Scandinavia – still holding hands. We sang faster and louder each time, until only a few could keep up, out of breath and full of the feast.

Afterward, we’d gather in the living room to exchange gifts quietly. By midnight, everyone would head off to bed, hearts brimming with Christmas joy and satisfaction.

A Feast of Tradition

Preparing the Christmas meal in Denmark is an event in itself, often taking at least half a day, followed by hours of feasting. Even today, Danish families remain fiercely loyal to their traditional dishes, and any attempt to replace them with modern alternatives is met with great resistance!

We always enjoyed succulent roasted duck, slow cooked for hours with prunes and apples, crispy pork roast (flæskesteg), and occasionally turkey. Side dishes included caramelized potatoes, sweet red cabbage, tangy cucumber salad, red fruit compote, and liters of the richest brown gravy.

Dessert was risalamande, a creamy rice pudding with a hidden almond. The finder of the almond won a special prize – but had to keep it secret until everyone finished eating. It was a serious sport, and despite already being stuffed, we all had seconds (or thirds) of the pudding with its luscious warm cherry sauce. Tradition demanded no less.

The Festive Season Begins Early

By November, the Christmas preparations were already underway. We baked endless batches of cookies – vaniljekranse, jødekager, pebernødder, and klejner . We made marzipan and nougat treats, rolled oat truffles, and more. Gifts, bought months in advance, were wrapped and hidden, though we kids often found them and tried to guess their contents without revealing what we’d discovered.

One highlight was a special package from my Norwegian grandmother and German grandfather, filled with unique Christmas treats like German stollen and Norwegian gjetost. Shopping for gifts in small villages or decorated cities, particularly Copenhagen, was a magical experience. Thousands of Christmas lights, beautifully adorned windows, and festive music filled the air with joy.

A Snowy Hunt for the Perfect Tree

Days before Christmas, we ventured into the snowy woods with our father to choose and cut down the perfect Christmas tree. The snow crunched beneath our boots as we bundled up in warm snowsuits and ran through the woods. It was always a white Christmas back then, or so it seemed in my childhood memories.

We spent hours throwing snowballs and laughing before finding the tallest, most harmonious Nordmann fir tree – one that reached the ceiling at home. Watching our strong father chop it down with his axe was awe-inspiring, and we all helped drag it through the snow, secure it to the car roof, and bring it home.

The Big Day

On Christmas Eve morning, the tree was set up in the living room, and we all helped decorate it with the most beautiful ornaments. The presents were placed underneath, Christmas music filled the house, and we indulged in sweets and cookies, as time seemed to crawl for us children.

By early afternoon, we bathed and dressed in our finest holiday outfits. After a cozy church service in the village – where the church, unusually packed, glowed with warmth – we returned home to watch Disney’s Christmas cartoons. Finally, at 6 p.m., the grand Christmas dinner began.

A Season of Memories

It’s been nearly 50 years since those magical Christmases, and though my parents and grandparents are no longer with us, I often think back on those times with fondness as December approaches.

As a family, we strive to keep many of these traditions alive and pass them on to the next generation.

For students who struggle to keep up or those who are ready to move ahead, AI offers a solution that could make education more inclusive and effective.

But with all these promises come significant concerns. As an IT manager, I worry about the implications of AI on the human aspects of education—the relationships, the mentorship, and the guidance that are so critical to a student's growth. We do have a long way to go.

But I confess, it can also be a lot of fun seeing students use AI technology.

Despite these fears, I also recognize the potential benefits of AI in education. It can be a powerful tool for enhancing learning, personalizing education, and providing support to both students and teachers. But it’s crucial that we approach AI with caution and a clear understanding of its limitations. As educators, we must ensure that AI complements rather than replaces the human elements of teaching.

For me, this means being intentional about how I integrate AI into my work. It’s about finding ways to use AI to support learning while also fostering critical thinking, creativity, and human connection. It’s about being vigilant in ensuring that AI is used ethically and that it serves all students equitably. Most importantly, it’s about never losing sight of the fact that education is, at its core, a human endeavor.

It’s here that the fishing industry began 150 years ago. In one of the old fishermen’s cottages, a fisherman shares stories about how the industry has evolved over time. But I won’t spoil everything—there’s much more to discover! There are also several dining options where you can sit back, relax, and take in the beautiful views

While this can lead to some pleasant, unexpected discoveries, it might be time for Google to come to Flensburg and renew the maps for pedestrians. This time, my adventure led me to the restaurant Ciel de Paris, perched high on the 56th floor of the Montparnasse Tower. Yes, it's like visiting heaven—literally and gastronomically!

Now, let me confess something: I'm not exactly a hero when it comes to heights. I've walked around the Montparnasse building a dozen times without ever feeling the urge to go up. A Grateful Reflection: The Journey of "From Kitten to King"

In July 2024, I released my first e-book and paperback, "From Kitten to King." Why did I embark on this journey? Sometimes, life presents moments that reshape your perspective. For me, such a moment occurred when I stumbled upon a YouTube video featuring Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and Kindle, discussing the All-New Kindle.

This interview, recorded 13 years ago, highlighted Jeff Bezos explaining the inception of the Kindle platform and its expansive possibilities beyond just using the Kindle tablet. One point captivated me: the ability to publish books for free, regardless of writing talent. This idea struck a chord, given the historical difficulty of getting a book published. Traditionally, authors had to find a publisher willing to take a chance on their work—a daunting task that often ended in rejection unless the writer persisted through significant challenges.

Jeff Bezos's forward-thinking approach made it possible for anyone to publish a book without upfront costs or the need for a traditional publisher. This concept fascinated me. As Jeff noted, the rise of devices like the iPad and Blackberry led to an increase in online reading. In response, he developed the Kindle tablet, which was initially launched with 3G connectivity—a remarkable innovation at the time. He envisioned consumers adopting the Kindle tablet primarily for reading books, a vision that has indeed materialized with many now owning Kindles, other e-readers, or using the Kindle app. The technology continues to evolve, and I foresee a future where we have Kindle tablets with integrated AI technology—something I eagerly anticipate.

Jeff also mentioned that even back then, there were over 630,000 e-books available, with more than 500,000 priced under $10. Inspired by this interview, I decided to draft a book myself. It was a challenging endeavor, but I persevered, and my creation eventually came to life.

The Kindle Direct Publishing platform is exceptionally well-designed, offering professional guidance at every step. From cover design to book layout and formatting, every aspect is thoroughly explained. If you encounter difficulties, a comprehensive help section and a responsive support team are available. Your book undergoes a review process by editors to ensure it meets certain standards—a nerve-wracking but crucial step. Finally, when your book goes live, it's a euphoric moment.

Since its launch in July, "From Kitten to King" has been available as both an e-book and paperback on Amazon. It’s been online for almost a month and is available in three languages: English, Dutch, and Danish, with a German version in the works. While there are multiple platforms for publishing, it was Jeff Bezos's words that motivated me to choose Amazon for my first book. His interview, though from 13 years ago, inspired me deeply. He designed the platform to enable anyone to create and share their work, whether online or in print, without financial barriers—a noble goal indeed. His genuine passion and appreciation for his team were palpable, emphasizing that such achievements were a collective effort.

So, I extend my heartfelt thanks to Jeff Bezos. Without his vision and encouragement, I might never have published

"From Kitten to King." This book, suitable for all ages, chronicles the life of my 13-year-old adoptive cat, Aapie, from his perspective—a coincidence I don't believe in.
